How to Select Keywords

With so many keywords out there, knowing which one to pick and which one to ignore is an essential skill that most SEO practitioners should embrace. Keywords can make or break your campaign. If you select the correct one, you will be rewarded with traffic and profit. But if you select the wrong one, you’ll waste your time, energy and money.

So how do you choose good keywords? Below are some guidelines that you can follow.

1. Choose keywords that are related to your site’s content.

Your keywords must satisfy both the user and the search engine. And so, you need to pick one that is related to your content. Don’t pick a keyword that is related to dating if your site is about internet marketing with the hope that you’ll get more traffic.

Your site will be viewed as irrelevant, you can lose credibility in front of your customer and even worse, your site might be banned from search engine listings.

2. Choose 50 keywords and separate the one with greater impact.

A good place to start would be to select 50 keywords and just select them that you think will have the greatest impact for your visitors. Consider the response generated by those keywords and the kind of people who will respond greatly to it.

Select keywords that resonates well with your intended target audience. The ones that the buyer uses instead of window shopper. And also the one that is closest in relevance to your site’s content.

3. Further separate it by the amount of competition.

In general, the shorter the keyword is, the more competition it will have – 2 words will have more competition than 4 words. When you use a keyword researcher tool such as the Google Adwords Keyword too, they will display the search count.

You don’t want to aim for keywords which have unusually high search counts because it’s way too competitive. Choose one with moderate amount of competition in your niche. There are no specific numbers to follow because all niches are different so the numbers are relative.

4. Write content or bid for those keywords.

Once you’ve selected the keywords, write content for it and post it to your site or bid for those keywords via PPC or PPV. Writing content for those keywords will help you get listed in the organic search result of the search engine but it will take time. On the other hand, paying for advertising will make your site get listed quicker but you’ll have to spend money for it and fight with other people who want that spot as well.
